Bringing Wine’s Past to the Present

griffithMost people travel to Europe to visit tourist sites. But some like wine antiques collector Chris Griffith go to dig through old barns and hang out with local historians.

Griffith owns a Napa-based business called Napa Antique Wine Artifacts. Several times a year, he travels to Eastern European countries such as Romania and Hungary to “pick” vintage wine items — everything from bottles and barrels to grape presses.

“I take a lot of pride in restoring the artifacts,” he said. “If you have an appreciation for history, even in a little way,” you can learn from that experience, said Griffith.

His buyers back in the U.S. also appreciate his finds. Many are winery owners or people who work in the wine business. They buy the old presses, wagons and other ag-themed implements for decoration at homes or wineries.
